Do I need a WhatsApp Business number?
Yes. The agent answers on a WhatsApp Business number from your own Meta app, so it works on your number, not a shared one. Your WhatsApp credentials are encrypted before they're stored.
Can it answer my customers on WhatsApp?
If you want it to. Each agent answers only you, you and people you add, or anyone who messages it. Messages from everyone else are saved but not answered, so nobody else can spend your API credits.
How is it different from WhatsApp Business auto-replies?
